The MLK Jr. Committee of Anne Arundel County has operated the MLK Jr. Awards Dinner for 32 years to honor Dr. King and individuals who have undertaken projects that reflect Kings values. The dinner also raises funds to underwrite projects in Anne Arundel County that reflect and recognize Dr. Kings values.
Over the years the dinner has been held, the MLK Jr. Committee has erected a large bronze monument to King on the grounds of the Anne Arundel Community College, a memorial garden honoring Coretta Scott King in Edgewater and most recently in 2013 a monument in Annapolis honoring the Foot Soldiers of the 1963 March on Washington. The funds earned from the awards dinner made these projects possible.
The Foot Soldiers Memorial cost the MLK Jr. Committee $50,000 which was paid off primarily from the earnings of the awards dinner.
The MLK Awards dinner has no debt and currently charges attendees $65. Between 600 and 1000 persons have attended the dinner in recent years.
The committee is inviting a local organization to take over the MLK Jr. starting in 2021.
The organization must be a non profit with 501-c3 federal tax status
Be committed to hosting the event for a minimum of three years
Agree that the event will be held in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Those bidding on this RFP must state their intentions regarding continuing the awards currently underwritten by other organizations.
Bidders will also announce their intentions regarding continuing the internally named awards.
Organizations must respond in writing to the MLK Committee. Their response should include information on their organization, its financial status (including its 2018 audited financial statement) and commitment to the values of Dr. King in Anne Arundel County. The RFP must be submitted by September 27, 2019 to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee, P.O. Box 371, Annapolis MD 21404 or by email to: carl_snowden@hotmail.com. The submission must include the 501-c3 tax exempt form and 2018 audited financial statement.
The board of the MLK Jr. Committee will announce the selected bidder by December 2, 2019. The decision will be made by a simple majority vote of the board of directors of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee.
The group that is selected will take over the dinner in January 2021 and the announcement will be made at the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner.
Questions should be addressed to Chairman Carl Snowden at carl_snowden@hotmail.com email or 443-871-5656 phone. A copy of last years’ program is available for review on the MLKJRMD.org web site as is this RFP. The program includes the names of all existing sponsors and advertisers.
